My name is Mrs. Jones-Lewis and I am your child's science teacher this semester. I would like to get your feedback throughout the year, in order to maximize the learning experience. Please visit this blog, and blog along with me whenever you can! Prompt #1: Students often think that the science they learn is only for science class, but that is not true. How do you use science for work or your everyday life?

Science is in all facets of everyday life. Cooking and baking use principles of science, and one must know how ingredients react to each other and in what conditions in order to have a successful recipe.

I didn't know that cooking could be so complex.

I totally agree that cooking could be used in science, outside of science class!

Science is used to ensure that we give the appropriate dosage of any medications. It is also used to determine which medications treat specific viruses/bacteria.

I really like your comment mostly because I would love to have a job like that!

That is very true! I think since science helps with dosages of medication and/or the specific medication, that is great. For example: If a child got the flu, it would be important to use science to treat the child using a specific medication for the flue, and a specific dosage of that medication!

Science is used in many areas of life. On a daily basis, I use science in the kitchen by cooking food for my family. I also use various simple and compound machines each day to make work easier.

I agree that science is very much in cooking! I would not have thought of the simple and compound machines idea.

That is true! Science is used on a daily basis with many things, including cooking, talking, and even writing! Science relates to all things in life, because all things are made of atoms, and atoms are scince. So, if you think about it, everything we say or do, is science!

Using science while working with food is very important, If you don't cook things long enough, at a high enough temperature, you would end up with food that could make you very sick.

Thank you to Mrs. Lilly, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Hawkins, and Mrs. Woodfolk for explaining how you use science in your everyday lives. Would any of you be interested sending us pictures and/or scenarios so that we can practice making observations and inferences? 2/9/2014 01:56:25 am
I use science to analyze the emissions from boilers and emergency generators used at UVA or the effectiveness of our air pollution controls. I also use science to understand the function of our storm water runoff controls.
